The 2016 Château de Fonbel from the team at Ausone is a brilliant Saint-Emilion in 2016. Tons of black raspberry and cassis fruits, notes of spice, and dried flowers, medium body, and a balanced, elegant texture all make for beautiful wine. It has the purity of elegance of the vintage front and center, and while it’s already hard to resist, it’s got 15 years of prime drinking ahead of it.

Property acquired by the Vauthier family in 1976. Garnet red with purple hues. The bouquet of this Fonbel is of a beautiful intensity with a precision and a rarely seen expression. I note notes of violets and mint, so a pleasant freshness. In wine, the wine is juicy, fruity and endowed with healthy, smooth and ample tannins. 2023-2036 92/100

  • 91 Robert Parker's Advocate - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

“The medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Fonbel has a classic nose of warm red plums, cigar box and black plums with nuances of redcurrants, Sichuan pepper and tar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers a lot of mid-palate fruit with lovely plush tannins and a long refreshing finish.”

  • 91 Vinous Antonio Galloni

The 2016 de Fonbel is soft, supple and quite pretty. Sweet, floral aromatics and gently lilting small red fruits give the 2016 its delicate, gracious personality. A model of understatement and class, the 2016 should drink well pretty much right out of the gate.

  • 91 James Suckling

This has a spicy edge with black and red fruit, as well as a reductive edge, leading to a succulent and juicy array of bright raspberries and red cherries. Drink or hold.

  • 90 Wine Advocate - Neal Martin

The 2016 Fonbel has a pretty cranberry and blackcurrant-scented bouquet, quite transparent and terroir-driven with nicely integrated oak (30% aged in new oak). The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, a lively and breezy Saint Emilion, not the most complex you will find but full of personality. The freshness suggests that this will drink early, and that Carmenere just gives it something different.

Barrel Sample. This fruity wine offers soft tannins and crisp black-currant tones. It is spicy and bright, with plenty of acidity on the finish.
