70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec
The 2019 Clos René continues a strong run of form for this oft-overlooked Pomerol estate. The bouquet is well defined and pure with vivacious red cherries, redcurrant jam and raspberry all interlaced with black truffle and dark chocolate scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well judged acidity, touches of orange rind and even marmalade infusing the tart red fruit. Everything here just seems extremely well proportioned. Recommended.
The nose is fruity, elegant, finely tight and offers a beautiful fat as well as power. It reveals notes of wild cassis, crushed wild strawberry, small notes of blackberry associated with fine touches of cornflower, grey pepper as well as a discreet hint of spices and chocolate. The palate is fruity, well-balanced and offers an acidulous frame, an almost saline minerality, a fine power, a fine grain and a beautiful touch. On the palate this wine expresses notes of crushed/fleshy blackberry, crushed wild cassis, small notes of wild strawberry associated with a touch of iris, lily as well as fine hints of small red berries, liquorice/zan, toasted and chocolate. Good length. Tannins are structuring and well-built.
Plenty of blackberry, chocolate and light walnut aromas and flavors. Medium body, refined tannins and a pretty finish. Attractive balance and refinement.
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Clos Rene charges out of the glass with gregarious scents of freshly crushed blackberries, plum preserves and wild blueberries with hints of hoisin, moss-covered tree bark and black truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has bags of vivacity, with an interesting interplay of fresh, crunchy black fruit and blue fruit preserves. Framed by ripe rounded tannins and bold freshness, it finishes on a lingering peppery note. (18th June, 2020)
