About Professional Ratings

These wine ratings are based on a 100-point quality scale, and are selected by each publication's unique criteria. Some wine ratings are expressed as ranges. When this occurs we will list the highest score in the range and note the full range within the tasting note.

While ratings may influence your decision, the ultimate judgment is your palate.

Tasting Notes
Intense red colour with flashes of violet. A generous bouquet dominated by vanilla, balanced with mocha and dark fruit. The flavour on the palate is fleshy and well-rounded, with silky tannins providing a wonderful structure.

Boyd-Cantenac are one of the most esteemed producers in Margaux. The estate makes this as a “second wine” from vines that undergo the same painstaking treatment to ensure low yields of high-quality fruit. The fruit is picked and sorted entirely by hand allowing a selection of the best fruit for use in the wine. The wine is fermented in inert containers and left to macerate on skins for a further 8-30 days after fermentation depending on the vintage. The wine is then aged in oak barrels (30-50% new) for between 12 and 24 months and racked when it has reached an optimum maturity. The blend is usually about two thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, and one third Merlot with a token amount of Cabernet Franc. It is released as one of the more opulent, and forward wines of any vintage and meant to be approachable relatively young. Never disappointing and a rather well-kept secret we think.

The same care goes into Jacques Boyd, the second wine of Château Boyd Cantenac, as into the estate’s first wine. For Lucien GUILLEMET, the best possible alliance in wine is a combination of complexity, power and elegance. From pruning through to harvesting, meticulous care is lavished on the wines to achieve the optimal ripeness level. Thanks to the terroir of thin silica and gravel soils providing good drainage and all the know-how of the owner, Jacques Boyd is a fine and powerful example of the Margaux appellation.

To make sure the second wines has the same character as its elder sibling, only the ripest fruit is used and all the flavour is preserved by careful extraction. Blending with more concentrated batches produces a nicely-balanced wine.

Serving Suggestions: A classic, harmonious Margaux which will partner ideally with roast poultry and other white meat dishes.
