Plenty of forest berry and leaf aromas with cedar wood and some menthol, ahead of a smooth and succulent palate that has an easygoing, flavorful core of ripe berries.

The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino Luce definitely holds its own. I was a little surprised to see that the Frescobaldi family opted to make this top-end Brunello in such a difficult vintage. Now that I have the sample before me I can clearly see the confidence required to make such a difficult choice. In fact, I’m not even sure I would get that this wine was from 2014 in a blind tasting. It delivers ripe and round fruit flavors of blackberry and plum, along with significant 15.5% alcohol and thick extraction that defies everything we know about 2014. There is a lot of power and grit at the core of this opulent Brunello. Some 25,000 bottles were made.

Deep red. Balsamic, spicy and earthy notes complement aromas and flavors of ripe blue and red fruit. Juicy flesh and very suave tannins give this a polished, creamy mouthfeel. Finishes long and multilayered. A very good Brunello in a difficult vintage such as 2014.

Mid ruby with bright bricky tinges. A nose that shows the merest hint of oak, but is otherwise quite locked. Plentiful ripe cherry fruit palate with fine, chewy tannins. Very good length, freshness and bite. Attractive and ready now but will go on for some time.
